Welcome Reading AE 6th graders!!

Hi Everyone- Below are our Sign Post Reading strategies that you should be monitoring throughout your books.  Please make sure that you read them over and always be aware of your learning and understanding of text why you're reading!

Compare and Contrast
A contrast between what a character was expected to act like, and then what they actually do.

Helps you to understand character development, internal conflict,  and theme

Follow- up question might be, “Why does this character feel this way?"

Aha Moment
-This moment reveals change for the character or the setting.
-“Suddenly, I understood…”
-“In an instant, I knew…”
-(clues you into plot, conflict, and character development)

Tough Questions
These are the tough questions that a character faces.

-Clues from the text include…
-‘What could I possibly do to…’
-‘How could I ever understand why he…’
-**Looking at tough questions gives you insight into Theme and Character Development.

Words of the Wiser
These are statements or advice or insight from a wiser (often adult) character in the book.
This usually will take place at a quiet or solemn moment in the book.
Clues you into ‘Theme’, ‘Internal Conflict’ and ‘Character Relationships’.

Again and Again
Recurring images, events or words often reveal insight into a character’s motivation or theme.
This should make you (the reader) think- why is the author doing this?
**Clues for this are repeated images, phrases or words.
